Dongguan bases on an export-oriented economy, especially to industry, a large sum of capital, raw material and products selling are closely related to the international market.

Foreign Economy As for foreign capitals, starting from the practice of processing, assembling, manufacturing and compensation trade, Dongguan has gradually developed to some other advanced forms, namely, Sino-foreign joint ventures, Foreign EconomySino-foreign cooperative enterprises and wholly foreign-owned enterprises. Investors comes from over 20 countries including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, America, Britain, Germany, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Finland and Australia. Among today' s foreign funded enterprises in Dongguan, there are 12 listed among the global top 100 ones, 30 listed on the top 500, 124 trans-corporations, nearly 800 overseas listed companies, among which are Dupont from the U.S., Netherlands, Hoechst from Germany, Thompson from France, Samsung Electronics from South Korea, as well as Panasonic, Sumitomo Metal, Sony from Japan, Taikoo Group from Britain, Nokia from Finland and Vtech from Hong Kong.

Among the City's Gross Industrial Output Value, manufactural industry accounts for 88.99% manufacture and supply of electricity, gas and freshwater 10.92%, extractive industry 0.09%. And among the manufactural industry, production of textile, clothing, leather and fur accounts for 14.81%, electronic and telecommunication apparatus 33.72%, all kinds of mechanical equipment 9.06%, plastic products4.29%, food and beverage 3.88%, papermaking and paper product 4.54%, goods of culture, education and sports 3.73%, and others 25.97%.
